Roulette is still one of the world’s favourite games in casinos these days. The motivations are self-explanatory:

  • One can learn it quite simply
  • The Return to Player has a very high value (97.3% on European Roulette)
  • There is plenty of exciting betting options to choose from

Virtually everyone has experienced this game at least once in their life. But few have come to grips with the intriguing history of the game and all the different wagering options available in the game.

For this reason, you can learn more about the different types and the (visual) evolution of the game. Have a good time!

The Glorious Story of Roulette

Roulette came to life in France during the 19th century – and since then the world has not been the same!

At that time there were innumerable versions of the game. Except they all had one thing in common: The famous little wheel of fortune. After all, the word also means “small wheel” in French. Slots were not invented at these times, and other conventional gambling games you find today in any decent casino had yet to be developed.

It has not been long until tales were spread about some people getting rapidly rich from the game. But people have also heard about how much they could lose by playing. For those who rumbled the game it was possible to became local heroes by winning a respectful amount of money. A gambler named James Walt was able to beat roulette at Monte Carlo Casino and a song was dedicated to him which still enjoys a certain degree of popularity today. Take a look at the following chorus:

Dostoyewsky and his roulette madness

Everyone was fascinated by roulette, rich and poor alike. Among the intellectuals fascinated by the game was the famous Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky, who processed his experiences in a book entitled The Gambler .

This book was written out of an imperative; the ageing and destitute Dostoevsky has gambled so much money in German casinos that he was well on his way to losing his left possessions! The issue was solved due to a clever publisher: He managed to get Dostoyevsky a loan on the condition of writing a book on gambling. In order to hasten the process of writing, he hired a secretary – a so-called stenographer – to Dostoyevsky. And lo and behold, after finishing the book, they even got married!

You probably believe Dostoevsky learned his lecture from this, but not a bit of it! Although he wrote about his gambling experiences and thus filled his bank account again, he still couldn’t keep his hands off playing. As a result, he was completely burned down again and bankrupt years later.

Various types of wheels

Since roulette has spread throughout Europe, several versions and designs became popular. Thus, In France they arranged the table somewhat differently compared to Germany or Great Britain, while other expressions were also used to name the different betting options. Yet the revolution started with the introduction of the American Double Zero wheel!

However, this latest evolution of the game was not quite player friendly, as double zero roulette offers rather poor odds. Accordingly, this has enriched the casino industry with some money and has paved the way for other forms of entertainment that we know today.

With the advent of online gambling, some new and exciting versions have emerged. Thanks to the live dealer technology, players now have the opportunity to try their luck at games such as Lightning or Dolphin Roulette. Therefore, the actual game can take on completely new dimensions!

Next, I will briefly describe the most popular types to keep you updated:

European Roulette

The European version designates what you probably know best: A table with 36 squares, a single zero and a return to player rating of 97.3%. In European Roulette, you can either bet on red or black, odd or even, making payouts in a ratio of 1:1. There are dozens of other bets you can place, including “Straight Ups” (35:1 payout) and “Rows” (3:1 payout).

French Roulette

French Roulette is perhaps the classiest and most original form of the game you can find. The odds and rules of winning are the same as in European Roulette, but it arranges the betting options differently and it also has French titles. You should keep “Manque” (1-18) and “Passe” (19-36) in mind, which correspond to a bet on odd/even numbers and pay 1:1.

American Roulette

This kind of Roulette – also known as Double Zero Roulette – is sort of a no-go for players, unless you truly want to dare your luck!

This Roulette features a return to player of only 95.2%, whereas Single Zero, European and French have a return to player of 97.3%. That makes quite a difference, doesn’t it?

Apart from that, you’ ll find a bunch of extra special bets worth knowing in case you ever find yourself in a casino running exclusively Double Zero Roulette!

00 = You may also bet on the double zero, of course. The payout ratio is 35:1.
Street = A street bet involves betting on the first three numbers, including zero. It is paid at a ratio of 6:1 and can only be played in American Roulette!

Triple Zero Roulette

Well, you have heard it all right! Triple Zero Roulette does exist, no matter how weird the concept might sound. The Venetian in Las Vegas has launched this game with the name Sands Roulette – with a house edge of insane 7.7%.

Luckily, this kind of roulette is only available in the Venetian so far and cannot be seen online. But even if it were, we wouldn’t recommend to venture this version: After all, the odds are poorer than on many old school slot machines!

English Roulette

English Roulette resembles more or less the European version of the game and is often used synonymously as both the Return to Player and the layout of the wheel are identical in each game. In English Roulette, they design the table quite different from other variations. In addition, no more than 7 people may play simultaneously at an English Roulette table.

Russian Roulette

Even though this cannot be considered a real roulette, it is still notorious: Russian Roulette relates to the practice of inserting a single ball into a revolver, spinning the drum, pointing the gun at your head and then pulling the trigger!

If you are lucky enough not to choose the trigger with the shot, your own life and possibly a prize from your competitor will be won. Admittedly, there is no real winner in this game!

Online versus physical roulette

Playing roulette online and in real life means two very different experiences. Nevertheless, they are the same game, regardless of whether you gamble online or in a Brick & Mortar casino.

Online roulette recreates the dynamics of physical wheel by using a PRNG or pseudo-random number generator. It is a mathematical algorithm performing hundreds of thousands of calculations per minute, yielding the same long-term results as real wheel. By doing so, players can be sure online roulette is just as random as its counterpart at a Brick & Mortar casino.

Simulating roulette on the internet

To enjoy the feeling of online roulette, as well as to test a strategy, an online simulator can be both beneficial and amusing – at least you can try the game for free thanks to the online versions, so you don’t have to make any deposits.

For instance, you can play the Netent version of the European Roulette in the demo mode right here. Take a spin!

The probability of manipulation

Every player’s greatest anxiety is about manipulated casino games, although this shouldn’t be a problem for you since there are very few cases of manipulated online games in recent history. Conversely, this does not imply there are no scam casinos, but the actual fraud takes place rather through intentionally confusing terms and conditions or refusal of payouts than by manipulating games.

In general, be aware online casinos do not possess their games, but rent them from game providers, meaning individual casinos are not able to modify the games or their payback ratio. Furthermore, all countries rigorously test, track and monitor all games, where they receive approval.

Online roulette uses a so-called RNG, which produces random numbers. Its algorithm is based upon the behaviour of real wheel. An independent third party always tests each casino game’s RNG.

Online roulette and its winning odds

To win at online roulette, you must place your wagers and wait for the best! Nobody can fool you as there is no bulletproof way to win. These people are just trying to sell you something!

To quote the alleged words of famous scientist Albert Einstein: “You cannot beat a roulette table unless you steal money from it.” There are strategies such as Martingale, D’Alembert or Paroli, which you can use, but by the end of the day the payout percentage of the game stays at exactly 97.3%. A strategy can only help you keep an eye on your budget!

Always remember that luck prevails. However, European Roulette remains a casino game with a pretty good payout percentage. If you hope to win a little money online, this is definitely not a bad start!

Free online demo games for everyone

One way to play online roulette gratis is a casino which offers a no deposit bonus for a certain roulette table – but they’re not as easy to get!

Check out the front page for a user-friendly list of fair and secure online casinos providing both deposit and non-deposit bonuses. Take a look and see if there’ s one that suits you!

Places to play

The online casinos featured here at CasinoBernie offer online roulette in a secure and regulated atmosphere. More than that, many casinos also have multiple different types of online roulette to choose from. You can pick European, French and American wheels, or try out something completely crazy such as Lightning Roulette or Dolphin Spin!

Online game strategies

Planning strategies for online roulette is about as old as the game itself, yet no one has beaten the roulette table.

Use caution and don’t trust every single information posted on the Internet. The chances of losing a lot of money are high then!

The house always wins in the end, regardless of which strategy you use, but there are other arguments why you might consider using a strategy. A plan makes it easier for you to count your winnings and losses. Therefore, a strategy facilitates the game in general.

In this section you can read a bit about the most common strategies – take a look at them if you want a fresh approach for your game!

Backtrack: The outer edge of the wheel. The ball starts its spin there.
Bottom track: Inner section mostly made out of metal in which the ball stops.
Chameleon: A person imitating another persons’ bets.
Column bet: When you bet on any of the three 12-number columns.
Combination bet: Concurrent bets on a single spin.
Croupier: Another, French term for dealer. He’s an employee of the casino employee who manages the game and its bets.
En plein: Straight up bet (French expression).
En prison: Not often used term expressing the choice to get back 50 % of your money. You can also decide to leave everything “imprisoned” and take another spin. In case this spin results in a zero your whole money will be gone.
Even/odd: Like the name says you’ll bet on even or odd numbers. It pays 1:1.
High bet: Bet on (high) numbers: 19 to 36.
Inside bet: See straight up bet.
Marker: The winning number for every spin is tagged by a marker made out of metal.
Martingale: Classic strategy for doubling the bet after every loss.
Mini roulette: A small and rare version of the game which I’ve never seen online. Only a few physical casinos offer this and features the numbers 0 to 13.
Orphelins: Betting on numbers which aren’t covered by tiers or voisins. These are: 17-34-6 and 1-20-14-31-9.
Straight up bet: Bet on any of the 37 numbers.
Split: betting on two side by side numbers by placing the chip between them.
Street bet: Betting on a row of three consecutive numbers of the European table.
No action: If the dealer notices an error he can decide the “no action” move and cancel every bet at the next spin.
Tiers: All 12 numbers 27-13-36-11-30-8-23-10-5-24-16-33 (French expression).
Trio bet: See Street bet.
Voisins: All numbers between 22-25. The exact ones are as followed: 22-18-29-7-28-12-35-3-26-0-32-15-19-4-21-2-25.
Voisins du Zéro: See voisins.
